NICU Professionals: Stop & Ask Yourself This Question

By Sue Ludwig

This is the question I began to ask myself as I left the hospital each day:

“If everyone in the NICU interacted with babies, parents, and co-workers like I did today, would this be a better unit or a worse one?”

And sometimes I fell short of where I wanted to be. But perfection is never the goal. Awareness is.

You are human. You have days that don’t work out how you planned or interactions that could’ve been managed more gracefully.

Give yourself permission to start again. No guilt. No shame. Tomorrow is a new day.

Just keep asking the question.

(It’s a great one to ask at home too.)
