If you heard Pattie Bondurant speak at NANT 8, you recall the importance of defining our services by levels of NICU care in order to better align neonatal therapy with the American Academy of Pediatrics’ NICU Verification Program and to establish clarity, not only for therapists, but for the hospitals and NICUs who utilize our specialized services. Additionally, neonatal therapists have been hungry for resources related to provision of services, roles, core knowledge areas, appropriate FTEs, and more.
To that end, “the current article presents a perspective on the role of neonatal therapists—occupational therapists (OT), physical therapists (PT), and speech–language pathologists (SLP)—in the provision of elemental risk-adjusted, neuroprotective care services in the NICU. Recognizing the staffing budget as one of the more difficult challenges hospital department leaders face, the authors present a formula-based approach to address staff allocations for neonatal therapists working in NICU settings.” *The FTE formula utilizes average daily census versus number of NICU beds.
