National Breastfeeding Month: Learn Something New in Support of Breastfeeding in the NICU

“This course is informative and practical. A great start for therapists new to this area of practice and a great resource if you have been practicing for a while. Jenny and Louisa are engaging and insightful, sharing their own learning experiences and shifts in practice along the way.” – Nicole Kaufmann, MS SLP, IBCLC, CNT

“As a seasoned clinician who was new to the NICU, this course laid the foundational knowledge and gave me the confidence to pursue this new field of practice.  Jenny and Louisa were incredibly knowledgeable and explained complex theories and strategies in a well-organized, easy to understand manner.  I refer back to this course and the information frequently in my practice.” – Deborah Kahue, MS, CCC-SLP

While Clinical Bedside Feeding Assessments in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) is a 14.5-hour course that provides neonatal therapists with the foundational knowledge to complete a comprehensive, clinical bedside feeding and swallowing evaluation in a systematic and evidence-based way, we specifically call Module 5 of the course to your attention in support of National Breastfeeding Month.

Module 5: Assessing Breastfeeding

Module 5 Objectives

1. Compare key roles a lactation consultant and a neonatal specialist share in the NICU.

2. Identify the anatomy of a mother’s breast.

3. List the oral movements necessary during breastfeeding.

4. List 3 breastfeeding assessments used in the NICU.

5. Recognize 3 interventions utilized during breastfeeding

This course emphasizes the importance of the whole-child and how to capture the complexities of the infant/family’s needs while in the NICU. It highlights all the interactions and synergies that greatly contribute to the overall growth and success of the infant and family. Finally, this course provides neonatal therapists a way to not only evaluate the infant, but to empower caregivers to effectively and safely feed their infants.

“This course was amazing! I realized a few days after my triplets were born that my NBCOT registration would lapse in less than a week, so I scrambled to find something that would give me the 10+ hours I was missing. Found this course browsing on the NANT site and completed it while doing skin to skin with my 3 babies.  It was so insightful, and I loved implementing some of skills taught while working with the triplets. Really looking forward to applying the principles taught when I return to work in the near future! It truly was a godsend for my postpartum, forgetful self. Plus, the babies definitely benefited from what I was learning! I even learned how to do skin to skin while pumping from the course – such a useful skill when balancing the needs of 3 babies!” -Anne Lyle Foster; OTR/L, CNT, NTMTC, CLC
