Course Title: Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome: Rethinking Our Approach

Course Description: This presentation challenges the traditional model of care that has been in place for decades in the management of neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS). Through analysis of a quality improvement project to improve care for infants with neonatal abstinence syndrome at Yale-New Haven Children’s Hospital, the presentation focuses on the rationale behind many of the changes in our model of care, focusing on a novel approach to assessing infants and optimization of non-pharmacologic care.

- Identify the rationale for the changes we implemented in the care of infants with neonatal abstinence syndrome.
- Define a committed, intensive non-pharmacologic care plan for these infants with neonatal abstinence syndrome.
- Select a novel tool for assessing infants that moves away from a traditional Finnegan-based protocol.
