Course Description
Infants with cleft palate face significant feeding challenges due to their inability to generate adequate intraoral suction. Specialized feeding systems are designed to compensate for this deficit, though none fully normalize the feeding experience compared to unaffected infants. This course will review the evidence behind choosing the most appropriate bottle-feeding system individualized to each patient’s needs. This course will include a multi-modal approach demonstrating proper use of specialty bottles, case studies and review of videos of infants with cleft palate and troubleshooting feeding challenges. Three main bottle systems will be covered which include: the Medela Special Needs Feeder®, Dr. Brown’s Specialty Feeding System®, and squeezable bottles. Both the Medela® and Dr. Brown’s® systems feature one-way valves and allow some degree of infant-driven feeding. Squeezable bottles offer practical advantages, requiring less modification and often demonstrate improved weight gain. Post-hospital discharge course will be reviewed to educate the attendee of the continued feeding challenges that our littlest patients and their families face pre and post-cleft palate surgery. Review of developmental feeding skill development in the cleft palate patient will also be reviewed using a case-based approach.
