Topic: The 9%: Why Resuscitate 22 Week Infants?

Course Description: This course balances the medical and ethical challenges surrounding resuscitation of extremely premature infants. Current variations in US neonatal practice are reviewed. Included is the intense and honest account of a mother’s experience with her own son born at 22 6/7 weeks.

Speaker Bio: Erin Hamilton Spence, MD, FAAP Dr. Erin Hamilton Spence is a neonatologist in Fort Worth, Texas and is affiliated with multiple hospitals in the area, including Baylor All Saints Medical Center at Fort Worth and Cook Children’s Medical Center. She received her medical degree from the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston, Texas. Dr. Hamilton Spence completed a Pediatric Internship, Residency and a Neonatal-Perinatal Fellowship at the University of Texas Health Science Center, Houston. She is certified by the American Board of Pediatrics in Pediatrics as well as Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine. She has been in practice for 13 years. She is also a passionate breastfeeding advocate and volunteers as the President of the Mothers’ Milk Bank of North Texas.

Alison Epps, Parent Ambassador, NICU Helping Hands Alison Epps is a parent ambassador and an official blogger of the PreemieBabies101 Hand to Hold parent blog. Hand to Hold is a nonprofit 501(c)3 organization that carefully matches seasoned parents of preemies with parents in need of support. These peer-to-peer relationships inspire hope and offer support from someone who is uniquely familiar with the experience of preterm birth, life in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, a child born with special health care needs, loss of pregnancy and/or infant loss.
Alison has one child who was delivered by emergency C-section at 22 weeks 6 days gestation. He weighed 15oz. and was 10 ½ inches long. He endured a 160-day NICU stay with 4 surgeries and multiple complications. He is now an active 5-year-old. She hopes to encourage change in hospital policy so babies born at less than 23 weeks gestation will be given a chance at life.

Instructional Method: Recorded webinar with handouts. Learning assessment and course evaluation follow course.

Course Completion Requirements: The learner must view the entire webinar, complete the course evaluation and complete the post webinar learning assessment with at least 80% to receive education credit. Login and logout times will be recorded and documented.
Following completion of this course physical therapists, nurses and other disciplines will receive a certificate of completion and a zip file containing information necessary to submit to their individual state for education credit. Zip file will include course bibliography. Physical therapists are responsible for knowing and adhering to their state’s deadlines, rules and regulations.
