Topic: For the love of Noah; A parent perspective on navigating NICU life and early development.

Course Description: This presentation explores a mother’s NICU journey and navigation of early intervention services. She reflects upon critical touch-points and helpful parent resources. This course offers the neonatal professional insight into the psychosocial complexities of parenting a preterm child.

Speaker Bio: Christy Gliniak OTR/L, CNT, NTMTC is a neonatal occupational therapist with a deep commitment to developmental care practice, enhancing the infant and family NICU experience and facilitating collaborative teamwork in the neonatal intensive care unit. She obtained her Occupational Therapy degree from the University of Alberta in 1995 and developed an ardent passion for neonatal therapy at ULCA in 2000. Christy is a certified neonatal therapist (CNT), a certified Neonatal Touch & Massage therapist (NTMTC), and has completed the developmental specialist designation through the National Association Of Neonatal Nurses. Mrs. Gliniak currently works in the level III NICU at MultiCare Deaconess Hospital in Spokane, Washington. In addition to her clinical work, she is highly involved in staff education, quality improvement initiatives, program development and marketing efforts for the National Association of Neonatal Therapists. Mrs. Gliniak has pursued additional education in healthcare leadership, business strategies, trauma informed care, and advanced neonatal feeding. She is a steadfast wife and loving mother of two.

Amanda Proszek attended Arizona State University for both her Bachelor’s and Master’s programs and is a graduate of Valley Leadership, Leadership West and The American Express Leadership Academy. Amanda has dedicated her 15-year career to the nonprofit sector, as the Vice President of Community Relations for Swift Transportation, the largest trucking company in the nation. During this time, she has also served on a variety of Board of Directors for numerous local organizations, including in an Executive Leadership Capacity for: The Young Nonprofit Professionals Network (President & Vice President), Phoenix Suns Charities SC88 (Executive Board), Valley Leadership (Executive Board), Leadership West (Executive Board) and Social Venture Partners (Executive Board). Amanda and her husband made the decision for her to take leave from her professional career in 2015 when it became evident that her son Noah needed some additional support. Since then she has worked tirelessly on Noah’s therapy goals alongside him every single day. Amanda and her husband Darin have three small children and reside in Tempe, AZ.

  1. Explain two ways to empower and engage family members during their NICU experience.
  2. Identify two difficult psychosocial outcomes that can occur in parents and/or NICU graduates following a preterm delivery.
  3. Describe two community resources available to families designed to support development or psychosocial needs following NICU discharge.

Instructional Method: Recorded webinar interview with handouts. Learning assessment and course evaluation follow course.

Course Completion Requirements: The learner must view the entire webinar, complete the course evaluation and complete the post webinar learning assessment with at least 80% to receive education credit. Login and logout times will be recorded and documented.
Following completion of this course physical therapists, nurses and other disciplines will receive a certificate of completion and a zip file containing information necessary to submit to their individual state for education credit. Zip file will include course bibliography. Physical therapists are responsible for knowing and adhering to their state’s deadlines, rules and regulations.
